Cats Countdown Series (list)

8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (or Catsdown as shorthand) started in 2012. C4 had turned 30 and they had the idea of smashing together mismatched shows. I won’t repeat everything in this post but the hit show 8 Out of 10 Cats (see here) was paired up with the daytime “letters and numbers” show, Countdown.

It was launched properly the following year (here) and Jimmy had another hit series (still going strong).

This post is to be the main series listing, to link from the Bio and TV Shows pages and, eventually, to capture all the links to individual Catsdown show posts.

Note: As a bit of history – Jimmy appeared on the daytime Countdown in Dictionary Corner – see here.

Series Numbering

As British Comedy Guide notes (here – in the blue panel) C4 decided in 2018 to renumber the two 2013 specials as S1. What had originally broadcast as S2 then became S3 etc. This renumbering meant that they gave up on S15 and went straight to S16. I think I’ll stick with the BCG system and use the original numbers (with the C4 number in brackets).

It’s baffling that they did this as, depending on where you watch, the same show may show either series number (up to S14).

Just to confuse things even more – Australia and New Zealand sometimes get to see shows before the UK and under a completely different numbering system.

And BBC Nordic (?) have details of S14 (here) with images that are clearly post 2021.

Broadcast order

Comparing how many shows were broadcast in 2015, to more recent years, you can see how Jimmy got busier, lockdowns impacted filming, Sean got sick – and C4 had rumoured financial issues.

As linear TV struggles with reduced advertising revenues there was a time (see this 2023 story and this one from Percy Warren) when it was rumoured that C4 would have to be sold (although this 2024 report looks more hopeful).

The point being – all kinds of things interrupted the filming schedule and, for whatever reason, a lot of 2019 shows were held back and shown out of sequence.

2012

The original 2 mash up shows are detailed – here and you can watch it in Archive.org here.

The 2nd show was billed as The Rematch and can also be watched on Archive.org – here

Suzi Dent (Dictionary Corner) and Rachel Riley (mathematician) have been in the show from the start. Rachel missed a few shows, due to pregnancy, and individual posts will detail stand-ins etc.

2013

Series 1 (as it was eventually renamed) was originally only 2 episodes (specials) and the Team Captains were Jon Richardson and Lee Mack. Full details are Here.

S1 (S2) 2013

Jimmy, as host, is now joined by Sean Lock and Jon Richardson as Captains. This is the regular format – except for where Sean’s health or Jon’s tour commitments meant that other Captains stepped in.

S15 (S16) 2018

Ep1 (July 13 2018) was an All-Woman Special, hosted by Katherine Ryan. Jimmy has said in interviews that he thinks women should have more spots on panel shows but I suspect many people (like myself) don’t like shows being “designed by quota”. IMHO this show became a success because of the Host and the 2 Captains. This is the only episode that Jimmy didn’t feature in.

Would love to see what the ratings were for this one (compared to others).

S19 (S20) 2020

Due to Jimmy’s hectic work schedule (plus getting the regulars all available) the 2020 shows were all filmed in between Oct 2019 and early 2020 – so there were no social distancing restrictions.

S20 (S21) 2021

Sadly, Sean Lock died in August 2021 and only appeared in Episodes 1-4. Ep2 was an old record from 2019 and so it’s hard to tell which was his last ever show.

This delaying of broadcasting also means that the social distancing measures (seating spaced out and plastic screens) seem to come and go (even though you may think that you are watching episodes chronologically).

New Team Captain

It was announced in November 2025 (see here) that Jon Richardson would still be in his role as Team Captain. Up to this point the Team Captain position that had been held by the late Sean Lock had been rotated around various comedians – but now Rob Beckett would be the other regular captain (with Jon).

It was also announced that, in the guest team positions, Judi Love would be making regular appearances.

Something else new for this series – the crowd warm-up man introduces Jimmy who walks on (to applause) and then introduces everyone else (who also then walk on).

This means John Pohlhammer is not the announcer on this series.

S28 (S29) 2025-6

2 episodes were filmed in September 2025 (here) and 6 more shows appeared on the ticketing site (see here). C4 have recently been holding shows back (for a future series) and, currently, only 5 are slated to be in S28 (S29).

During January this series was publicised as having Ep4 on February 6th 2026, but without listing the cast. A week or so before it was supposedly scheduled to be shown, this episode broadcast date was removed and so this series ended on Ep3.
