Awards

All things Awards shows: Winning, Nominations, Hosting, Presenting…

In the early years Jimmy won quite a few awards but the way of the world is that, when you are in Phase 1 (new and fresh) you are up for loads of “best new comer” type awards. Phase 2 is when you’re too mainstream and not cool enough for recognition (and the new kids need a chance)…until Phase 3 rolls around, when you are finally old enough for a “lifetime achievement” award.

Having said that – the more details that I have found, the more that I thought this is a pretty consistent list of accolades and achievements (especially for someone that’s not a press darling). Only a tiny number of comics manage to sustain any level of success, across several decades, and he’s managing to straddle stand-up comedy AND TV work.

Some of these awards are a bigger deal than others and many refer to “lads mags” that no longer exist. Mags like Loaded, Nuts and Zoo loved an excuse for an awards ceremony and a party (many of which were televised) but, unfortunately, as money became tighter, the number of UK Comedy awards had decreased.

I’ve listed, where possible, the other nominees (usually in another post). To give an idea of who else was coming through the ranks each year.

Note: When a show says “longlisted” it refers to a “longlist” of perhaps 20-50 choices, that are available for the public to vote on. From that longlist vote the final list of nominees will usually be a shorter list of around 4-6 people / shows (sometimes referred to as the shortlist, depending on the award). Otherwise – it tends to be a case of Nominee / Winner.

This is a dynamic document that is being regularly updated – as I find more information.
