The Comedy Store in Los Angeles (8433 W. Sunset Boulevard) was founded in 1972 by husband and wife team Sammy and Mitzi Shore and comedy writer Rudy DeLuca. The idea came about in order to give Sammy (who used to be Elvis Presley’s opening act) a place where he could perform.

Mitzi came up with the name and ended up running the club and booking the comedians and, after their divorce in 1974, Mitzi won the club in the settlement.

There is more about The Store’s history here – but its legendary status came about because it showcased unknowns who went on to become huge stars. Names such as Robin Williams, Richard Pryor, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Garry Shandling, Jim Carey, Bill Hicks and, in more recent times, Joe Rogan, Sebastian Maniscalco and Whitney Cummings.

Anyone selected by Mitzi was referred to as a “paid regular” and those names are on the wall of fame which lists all of their alumni.

The website describes “paid regulars” as “modern philosopher, brave enough to challenge authority and hold a funhouse mirror to show us perspectives we had never considered, but now can’t forget”. They list some of these modern day alumni as Dave Chappelle, Louis CK, Ali Wong, Theo Von, Jeff Ross, Bill Burr, Iliza Schlesinger. And on 30th July 2018 Jimmy’s name was added to the roster and hand painted onto the wall. Meaning he can turn up at any time and walk out onto one of the stages in the venue, to perform.

Mitzi, unfortunately, passed away on April 11th 2018.
