In 2022 Netflix launched what looks like a rival to Montreal’s Just For Laughs – Netflix is a Joke Festival (frequently shortened to Netflix is a JokeFest). More on the rest of the festival later – let’s look at Tuesday May 3rd.
Dave Chappelle was playing the Legendary Hollywood Bowl (capacity 17,500) and Jimmy got to be on the bill, alongside his comedy hero Chris Rock (and others – including Michelle Wolf, Sebastian Maniscalco, Jon Stewart and Jeff Ross).
THIS was the infamous night when someone stormed the stage with what everyone thought was a gun but turned out to be some kind of replica that opened out as a knife.
Kudos to the Daily Mail for actually noticing Jimmy standing, on the stage, behind Chris Rock and Dave in a couple of their pictures. Some press were clueless though and said he was “there” rather than that he had been performing.
There’s a good write up about how the evening progressed (and how well Jimmy’s material went down) in Vanity Fair. Pictures and video of the man being loaded into an ambulance showed one of his arms wasn’t quite at an angle that looked entirely natural!!
Only a few weeks before (March 27th 2022) Will Smith had slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars, raising concerns that this would encourage people to attack comedians if they didn’t like what they were joking about. Luckily none of the comics were hurt.
The bill that night (hosted by Jeff Ross) was (I think) in this order:
- Jeff Ross
- Michelle Wolf
- Jimmy Carr
- Sebastian Maniscalco
- Jon Stewart
- Chris Rock
- Jabbawockeez
- Costa Contra
- Jeff Ross and Jimmy Carr roasting audience members
- Dave Chappelle
Below is Jimmy telling Mo Gilligan about it (broadcast 8 July 2022).
