Channel 4 often used to entertain us by broadcasting charts of “100 greatest something or other”. I’m not sure how they collected the votes (they were polls of the “British public”) but in 2007 they managed to get a 4 hour programme out of The 100 Greatest Stand-ups, across 2 episodes.
On the one hand comedy is entirely subjective and we would all have our own version of the list. On the other hand – this was a UK audience poll and so, despite many of the American greats being in the mix, it’s def skewed towards our comedians. As it should be.
In 2007 Jimmy was placed 12th and, when the poll was re-ran in 2010, he was 13th. Looking at the names in the lists I’m not sure I, personally, would classify them all as stand-ups per se. Many are what you might describe as “funny people from the tele”.
All of which rambling is really just an excuse to include the clip, below, found in the depths of my notes – from the 2007 poll show.
