In 2013 a Lee Mack book was published (Mack The Life) and he tells this story of being with Jimmy at an event. A small demonstration of how in love with his career the “hardest working man in comedy” has always been.
Many years ago I was sat with Jimmy Carr having dinner as some comedy bash, and we saw Bruce Forsyth on a different table. Jimmy said “It’s great this job, isn’t it? Look at Brucie, in his eighties and still going strong. This means we can be doing this job for years to come”. Jimmy had meant this as a positive, but I just thought “You’ve got to be kidding!”. I told him I wanted to retire at some point and tend to my allotment. Actually, I know nothing about gardening and probably didn’t say that. I probably said to Jimmy something like “I want to retire at some point and lie on a beach with a load of hookers”, because I’m good at knowing my target audience.
There is a book review in Chortle.
