A new interview has dropped on New Zealand radio channel, NewstalkZB. The Mike Hosking Breakfast show (June 12th).
13 minutes of audio – you will need to be in NZ to listen (or have VPN).
Due to the time difference this was recorded on June 4th. Jimmy had been on stage in Basingstoke and then got on the phone to speak to Mike.
I have to say I always love the Aus / NZ radio shows as they seem genuinely interested and ask decent questions.
Apart from what is mentioned in the text of the link above – they cover:
- Every 3 years get to go to NZ and miss winter
- Work is more fun than fun – works as much as he possibly can
- Cancellation is a new word for what used to be “getting dragged in the press”
- So long as your own audience doesn’t cancel you, you are golden
- The Big Pitch with Jimmy Carr – at this point only one episode had been released, when asked how it had gone the jocular answer was “well the cheque didn’t bounce”
- There’s a lot of content out there and, if you watch something you are not enjoying for more than 5 minutes, that’s on you
- It was fun to be spontaneous and to improvise with other comedians
- Depression is thinking about the past and anxiety is when you are thinking about the future – he has a propensity to be a little bit anxious
- Mike asked about the Alison Hammond Big Weekend show – Jimmy talked about how, as we get older, we lose “play” and that going to see someone on stage (in any format) is watching someone playing
- When asked about success – he said it depends on your metric and what you want from life
- Talked about writing new material each show and that, by the time he gets to NZ, it will have evolved a bit
- When asked how he spoke to Joe Rogan for 3 hours, Jimmy said Joe is genuinely interested in other people
- When asked where the fun was in going to somewhere like Invercargill Jimmy talked about other comedians who “do New Zealand” but only go for 1 night in Auckland
- Mentioned that he was playing New York this month and that, somewhere like that, people have other options. With Invercargill it’s likely there isn’t much else going on.
- Who makes his suits – Thom Sweeney. Feels like he should dress up “for work”, especially when people have paid good money to go and see him
