After working together on C4’s Alternative Election Night the band were re-united for a topical comedy show, on C4, called 10 O’Clock Live.
It started broadcasting on January 20th 2011 (Series 1, Episode 1) and ended on June 12th 2013 (Series 3, Episode 8). 33 x 1-hour episodes in all.
The 4 of them had some individual monologues / sketches / interviews – but also worked together on round table discussions.
- David Mitchell
- Jimmy Carr
- Charlie Brooker
- Lauren Laverne
The clips below will give you an idea of what it was like, if you have never seen it before.
The 4 were all credited as being on the writing team, with other writers supplying “additional material”. In the 2nd and 3rd series one of those contributors was Gary Delaney and series two saw an early example of Jimmy working with Tim Inman, Andrew and Steve Dawson (Dawson Bros) – who would go on to work with him on Fackham Hall. Rich Hall contributed to S3 Ep7.
Reviews noted at the time that some of the gags were so fresh that they could only have been written on the day of recording – but still managed to complain that “it wasn’t The Daily Show”. The way Brit reviewers are I could only imagine that, if it had been too MUCH like The Daily Show, that would have been a problem too.
There is an interview on Comedy.co.uk, with the cast, that has Jimmy quipping that his most embarrassing moment was “Dangling from the lighting rig of the studio dressed as an SAS Soldier hopelessly spinning away from the autocue I was trying to read.”
Other Links
A number of Podcasts were assembled (of “best bits” from the series) – see here.
Although it hasn’t been posted from in a long time – there is also an X account for the show.
This official C4 clip (below) will not allow me to embed it into the post, but is well worth a watch. A round table session (titled “Bite Your Balls Off“) it’s mostly Jimmy and David debating how to bite off someone’s balls…descending into a bit of a rant and Jimmy getting up on the table to allow David to demonstrate his technique.
