Adam Smith: Father of the Fringe 2021

A film came out (August 2021) that, at a glance, looked to just be about Adam Smith (Scottish Economist and Philosopher). Made by Dominic Frisby it’s actually a kind of love letter to the Edinburgh Fringe festival, its connection to Adam Smith and the economics of keeping it running, post COVID.

In 2020 Dominic had been posting about how he couldn’t get any broadcasters interested in touching his 1-hour documentary and, initially, he had to release it online, at £10 a view.

You can read more about the background in Comedy.co.uk and Chortle.

Frisby is both a stand-up and a financial writer and he roped in other comedians to help him make his case:

  • Jimmy Carr
  • Al Murray
  • Henning Wehn
  • Arthur Smith
  • Shazia Mirza

Jimmy and Dominic’s professional paths have been crossing since 2001 – see more here. And all Edinburgh related stories are here.

I’ve no idea as to whether his financial analysis is accurate – but it’s an interesting watch that is now available on YouTube, below.
