On March 17th 2026 Jimmy’s appearance on Katherine Ryan’s podcast (What’s My Age Again?) was published.
If you’ve not already seen / listened it (see here) you may want to have a watch (before I spoil it and tell you what Jimmy’s biological age actually is, further down this post).
This post is to put out into the world of AI summaries something that is closer to the actual contents of the podcast. Rather than the clickbait headlines (led by The Daily Mail and now being taken up by others) which ran along the lines of:
“I’m very conscious of weight”: Jimmy Carr reveals he only eats once a day as he details “unhealthy” relationship with image, body dysmorphia in men and surviving on black coffee and water.
It’s the last 6 words that are not an accurate summing up of the 56 minutes of discussion.
Firstly, the body dysmorphia perspective is something that he’s been honest about before and the best example is probably the two 2024 episodes of Neal Brennan’s Blocks podcast (here) where they both discuss keeping their weight down because they were conscious of how they appeared.
On this topic the tabloids should perhaps look at their own contribution as they frequently post slightly unflattering images (of both men and women) with a headline that is worded to have people flocking to the comments to post snarky remarks about their appearance. You can’t encourage people to publicly pick apart someone’s flaws and then not expect them to have a hang up about it.
In Katherine’s podcast Jimmy explained how he has to spend a lot of time looking at his own face (and old hairline) as he has to look through so much promotional material, to give approval.
Years ago, you had a couple of pictures taken for your tour poster and someone perhaps tarted it up a bit and that was it for another couple of years.
Now, these are people that have to be photographed a LOT (despite being in an industry that should not be defined by looks) and are also regularly in front of HD cameras. Many people dread seeing holiday photos – can you imagine having to go through that week in, week out?
So did he say he “survived on black coffee and water?”. No, that was within the answer to Katherine’s question about intermittent fasting, as he explained that he only eats 1 meal a day.
There’s a subtle difference between the meaning of “I only eat 1 meal a day and I’ve not had it yet, so I’ve been taking in fluids” and their implication of “I’m surviving on black coffee and water so that I don’t HAVE to eat”.
Plus, with each decade that passes it’s natural to eat less and many people naturally shift to 1 meal a day.
He also said that he wasn’t being paid to promote them but he had had a drink of AG1 by Athletic Greens, which is a powdered supplement containing plant fibre, vitamins and minerals.
In past interviews he’s said that his weight went up, in his mid to late 20s, because he was eating takeaways after gigs, late at night. Note the Mike Birbiglia quote mentioned:
Healthy food goes to bed early
Jimmy expanded on that with “try and get a salad after 11pm – junk food is out late, being irresponsible”. And before someone chimes in with “you can where I live”…the man tours 50+ countries. He may be staying in nice hotels but it doesn’t mean he can find something to eat, that suits his diet, at 1 in the morning. This is probably why some stars travel with personal chefs.
He’s very health conscious and gives the example that, as he gets older, he can’t eat or drink on a flight – and then lists all the things he that does on a daily basis (admitting that it’s a boring lifestyle).
His biological age (as opposed to his chronological age of 53) is an incredible 27. And this was based on a blood test that had been taken after he’d had 2 weeks off for Christmas and “really enjoyed drinking” (he joked that his blood “may as well have had an Olive in it”).
One of the things he does, which will have contributed to the “youth” of his cells (which is what the biological age is intended to show) was that he intermittent fasts, by having only 1 meal a day.
To explain why this would be a good thing (not trying to convince you to try it) – Western culture means people have access to food around the clock and, when you reduce your eating window, a natural process, called Autophagy, starts up. This is where cells do a bit of housekeeping and shed damaged material. Doing a bit of recycling. Regeneration.
For most people 1 meal a day is too extreme, but just cutting back the hours during which we eat is a good start.
Add into this his prioritising sleep and love of sauna / cold plunge and we have a 53-year-old man with 27-year-old cells. Which was NOT mentioned in the tabloid article.
Instead of them focussing on the phrase “surviving on coffee and water” it would have been nice to have them take the positive side, by pointing out the lifestyle choices that have made him so much younger on the inside. Isn’t that something everyone should aspire to, if they want a healthy old age?
