Joel Dommett has been on Davina McCall’s podcast, Begin Again.
Clip below and (when he said he’d realised that “the more you put in, the more you get out”) Davina prompted him by asking if it was something he’d read, from Jimmy.
Cue a plug for The Naked Jape (Only Joking in some territories) – here.
A book I’ve read several times as it’s great for dipping into at bedtime and full of so much great advice, fascinating history of joke telling – and jokes on every page.
Joel is right to say Jimmy treats himself as a business and has a unique approach amongst comedians. And I’m sure that his yardstick of success will include a metric of size of income (as it is for many people). But I’m not convinced it’s his driving force.
Having listened to / read 100s of podcasts / interviews (with Jimmy) he is consistent about how obsessed he is with comedy, how he’d love to get better at it and how he’s not good enough (yet) to be on the Mount Rushmore of Comedians – but he has a ticket to the lottery.
He’s as ambitious now as he ever was and I’ve tried to explain this in his Bio, under the section headed “Innovations – Streaming, YouTube etc.”
