In September 2009 The Chris Moyles Show (R1) did a “4 city tour” on a bus and September the 10th was the date of the 4th night, at London’s Indigo at the O2. At the time the Moyles show was the longest running Radio 1 breakfast show ever.
The show below is from the morning of the 11th and the many references to karaoke refer to the O2 event – which included John Barrowman, James Corden and Peter Andre.
Aled (who works on the show) is driving around London on the bus and everyone else is in the BBC R1 studio. Some short clips are played of the truly dreadful singing and, as Jimmy rightly points out, the memory of karaoke is always better than what actually happened.
There are also references made to an awful picture of Chris that is on the back cover of Justin Lee Collins’s book. Having found a picture (of the book cover) on a certain e-marketplace it appears to be one of Justin and Chris in pink dresses and kitten heels, from this photoshoot (Alamy) shot during the record of The Friday Night Project.
The full radio show started at 6.30am and ran for 3 hours 30 (here) and Jimmy was on air from 7.45am. He mentioned that he’d been gigging in Felixstowe the night before and was due in Worthing on the evening of the 11th.
His reason for being there was to promote his Telling Jokes DVD, although he’s more interested in celebrating his mate, Chris, doing his dream job for so many years. Jimmy’s current tour was Rapier Wit.
At some point Chris left the building to smoke and, while chatting to Jimmy (Starbucks coffee in hand) they are papped. See 4 pictures from Getty Images – here.
Jimmy is wearing a hoody and Chris makes several references in the show to this and the man bag he has with him. Towards the end of the half hour or so of his appearance, he’s asked what he carries in it and gives an interesting insight. He explains that he has notes inside that are basically keyword prompts for the joke order of his routine. When he “has a cup of tea” he basically rehearses his routine by reading the prompts.
A 1 hour 44 min crop of the show can be downloaded from here.
Around the 13 minute point Chris is cracking jokes about how Jimmy is “working his nuts off” and saving the economy single handedly with all of this touring. Bringing the UK out of recession.
This was quite likely said while Jimmy was on the other side of the glass as, around 35 minutes, Chris mentions the man bag and says Jimmy is at the door going “do you want me now”.
The interview starts properly at 38 minutes (Jimmy’s part runs to 1 hour 16) and he is instantly popular when he brings in chocolate brownies.
Twitter comes up several times and, back in 2009, Jimmy used to regularly post jokes. Like MANY comedians his social media engagement has become more distant now, due to the vile abuse that anyone famous gets on a daily basis.
SPOILER ALERT
If you want to listen to the show and not know what’s coming up – stop reading now (it’s def worth a listen) as I’ll just headline what they covered.

- Jimmy talking about how much he drives around the UK and how service stations, which are mostly HGVs, have “6 racks of gentleman’s special interest magazines and VHS tapes”

- Edinburgh Fringe 2009 (here) – talking about appearing there and Jimmy doing 8 shows but also allowing 4 days to see other comedy.
- Previous Edinburgh – recounted seeing Top Gun The Musical with Charlie Skelton

- Chris starts a discussion about how many comics are horrible about their contemporaries and how generous Jimmy is with his praise
- Jimmy mentions he used to have a radio show “but was terrible”
- 54.33 there is a minute or so of news being read out. Later in the show they have to apologise as complaints had been phoned into the BBC about Chris / Jimmy laughing in the background. Chris explained that they were not laughing at the news – they were on the other side of the room looking at photos from the night before.
- Aled (on the tour bus) is approaching Westfield, Shepherds Bush and asks if anyone wants anything. Jimmy says just socks and pants and a discussion ensues about whether he should go on stage in JUST black socks and briefs.
- Just after the hour point Jimmy brings up the topic of the photo on the back of Justin’s book – bantering about what they look like and Justin’s male camel toe.
- Cheryl from Fife wants to know how big Jimmy’s TV is – Jimmy explains this is probably a reference to a heckle he regularly gets about “you look bigger on TV”
- Discussion about sock suspenders
- Discussion about whether taxis and buses are exempt from the congestion charge and Jimmy being a mini cab driver
- Discussion about John Barrowman in shorts (last night) and how his legs being like Tina Turners
- What’s in your man bag – see above
- Jimmy explains why/how he once mixed-up Newcastle and Sunderland but the audience just thought he’d intentionally made the joke
- Jimmy telling how, for 6 months after doing this show, people had requested Dominic the Donkey – Chris then asks listeners that are going to the gig tonight to shout it out
- Ends at 1 hour 16 and next guest is Justin Lee Collins

Fact Checking – 2009 09 18
Just slightly fact checking Archive.org website (and Chris’s own archive, which says Jimmy joined them in the studio, on the 18th). The 2 audio files below are dated September 18th and that part is accurate, in relation to the show recording, that’s within the audio files.
The BBC website (here) details the contents and you can see that Jimmy is not listed as a guest.
I’ve had a quick browse through the below and it appears some clips of the audio from Jimmy’s appearance on the 11th (above) were played within the show on the 18th.
Nothing wrong with that as, for example, the 44-minute version is listed as “Best of Chris Moyles”. Just making it clear that Jimmy was only physically in the studio on September 11th 2009.
