Electronics behind an Arena show

This post may not be of interest to many people as it’s about the company / sound system being used on Jimmy’s Laughs Funny tour, for the Arena shows.

Back in 1998, when he first started out, he was running around London doing gigs in rooms above pubs. As he started to develop a fan base he moved up to bigger and bigger venues around the UK and, as we’re a relatively small country, this just meant he was spending a lot of time driving up and down the M1 and in service stations. His Manager and/or Tour Manager may have been with him – but it was a relatively low-key set up.

As he moved up in the world (to venues with a capacity of mostly 1-3,000) there was now a crew needed. We’re no longer in the phase of Jimmy just being able to rock up and walk out onto a stage and, because of the Heckle Amnesty video recording (which began filming gigs from June 2024 – here) now there’s more complexity around sound and video.

To get an idea of how things have moved on (to where a crew was needed) see this 2010 backstage interview at the Edinburgh Fringe – here. I love seeing behind the curtain and this video has him chatting in his dressing room and then being followed out on stage for a sound check.

Then 2025 moved up another gear (in the UK) as he’d performed in Arenas in other countries – but never here. Previous Arena shows would have needed to hire a local sound and lighting crew – but nowhere near as complex as the requirements of setting a stage up “in the round”.

This case study page, on Adlib’s website, has some pictures of the audio, lighting, video, sound board and rigging being assembled for the Arena shows (in the round) – along with a crew list. Big tours like this create jobs for a lot of people. Plus, a MIND-boggling amount of electronics.

The video below throws a lot of kit names at you – but give it a watch for the clips (soundless) of Jimmy on stage at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena (December 11th 2025).

This is quite interesting, too! I enjoy when you post something like this and when you share your opinion. It’s different from what is posted everywhere else.

Bless you! I’m trying to line up the next morning’s post (on a timer) so I can focus on longer posts. Some come out like just a couple of lines but may have a couple of hours behind them (trying to prove or disprove what happened). Soooooooo much half written or noted down as reminders…
