Inbetweeners Top 10 2011

August 14th 2011 was the first showing of a C4 show called:

The Inbetweeners: Top 10 Moments

Fans of the show had voted for their favourite moments, from all 3 series, and this countdown was narrated by Greg Davies.

The 47.15 long show (which is available on Channel4 or Apple TV) was a mix of the countdown of the Top 10 clips, interspersed with the 4 actors talking about how they felt filming each one – and a number of “talking head” celebrity fans.

Some of the celebrity fans were good value (Jimmy Carr, Ricky Gervais, Harry Enfield and Matt Dawson) but, at the other extreme, you had reality TV people (from Geordie Shore and Towie). In one way the latter group were more the show’s target demographic – but their comments were not what you would call insightful.

Looking around a couple of forums this vast difference in the quality of contributor did not go down well. But, then again, they also were not happy with the Fwends Reunited celebration either, in 2019 (see here) so there’s a fair bit of fanaticism around the show.

Jimmy actually featured the most of anyone – I suspect partly because he was a long-time friend / collaborator of the show’s creators/writers (Damon Beesley and Iain Morris). The contributions of him and Ricky were actually “valuable” because they’d worked with the 2 writers on other projects, were fans of The Inbetweeners and had actual anecdotes to add.

Ricky insisted that Morris and Beesley had “bullied” him (when they had worked together on another show) and that he’d gotten back at them by using their real names in Extras and making them both gay. This YouTube clip, of the 3 of them discussing this story, is actually from this Inbetweeners Top 10.

Jimmy, meanwhile, was featured 18 times – with the clips lasting anything from 10 seconds to a minute or so. Which means he got a fair chunk of screen time from the 47 minutes duration (more than anyone else, apart from the 4 actors).

There is a clip of 1 character who, while trying to lose his virginity, was “pogo’ing against the perineum” and Jimmy said this was actually one of Iain’s own real-life experiences.

When talking about how the show was conceived Jimmy said that there were so many bad things that had happened to DB and IM that they had had to write for FOUR characters to feature it all.

And, when it gets to the #2 clip (Testicle fashion show) Jimmy said that he’d laughed so much at that, when it first broadcast, that he’d had to pause it. He said that his “other half” couldn’t understand why he found it so funny.

Details of Jimmy’s XFM radio show and DVD production work with Iain can be found here and Damon’s production work, on Jimmy’s DVDs, is here.
