East Dulwich Tavern (still around – see here) is a pub on the corner of Lordship Lane and Goose Green (officially 1 Lordship Lane, SE22 8EW).
The comedy side was upstairs at this venue (known as the EDT) but Chortle wrote in October 2001 (here) that the comedy club was being evicted so that the owners could turn the space into a restaurant.
EDT became EDC (East Dulwich Comedy) and moved further down to 211 Lordship Lane (to The Magdala Tavern, apparently also known as the Lordship). EDC then eventually moved to The Hobgoblin until 2015 (there are still recent posts for EDT and EDC so some comedy is still happening, under those banners). I lost track of who was where after a while…
Six months before the eviction (from East Dulwich Tavern), on Saturday April 7th 2001, the EDT put on a line-up of 4 comics, MC’d by Julia Morris. No details of the start time or ticket price (see Newsshopper).
- Jimmy Carr
- Dan Anolpolski
- Steve Bowditch
- Jasper Holmes
Who else was gigging?
Only one other event had performer names listed (on the Newsshopper article) and I couldn’t find any more, around that weekend. Doing my best to preserve a bit of Brit comedy history, but it’s not information that is easily found.
Sunday April 8th at The Hobgoblin (Jimmy has performed there, see here) The Brixton Comedy Club put on:
- Ivor Dembina (MC)
- Ed Byrne
- Steve Bowditch
Background
At this stage of his career Jimmy had been performing above pubs and “going on stage after strippers” (his words) so there was no tour name.
He was now starting to get more regular bookings and was appearing more in dedicated comedy clubs and slightly bigger rooms.
Still a jobbing comic – but about to take a step up, at the Edinburgh Fringe, with Rubbernecker.
There is a page (here) about the UK Comedy Circuit and Pubs and Clubs 1998-2001 (here).
