November 23rd 2001 Jimmy headlined at the Friday Night Comedy Club, 21 South Street, Reading, Berkshire, RG1 4QU (later renamed South Street Comedy Club – here). At this venue Jimmy was up to a 140-seat venue (assuming the room was full).
Starting at 8.30pm ticket prices were £7.50 / £6 concessions.
The line up was:
- Jimmy Carr
- Gordon Southern
- Drew Barr (compere)
Who else was gigging?
As a comparison to where other comics were in their careers, in 2001, the following Friday (30th) this club would be hosting Marcus Brigstocke. Marcus was ending his UK tour here and his ticket prices were £8 / £6.50 concessions. He’d just starred in a hit BBC1 sitcom called The Savages.
This November 16th article says The Friday Night Comedy Club “next week” would feature Stephen K Amos, Gordon Southern, Will Smith and compere, Drew Barr.
November 16th Reading’s Hexagon would see Harry Hill performing (here) and Jack Dee was also due there for 2 consecutive Sundays.
Wycombe Town Hall was hosting Jerry Sadowitz on November 27th and his 8pm show was priced at £12.50. Back in 2001 he had a C5 TV show, The People versus Jerry Sadowitz.
Background
At this stage Jimmy was just performing above pubs and “going on stage after strippers” (his words) so there was no tour name in 2001. Just driving up and down the UK, sometimes doing 2-3 different venues a night and hoping to get enough money to cover his petrol money.
In August he had performed the Rubbernecker revue at Edinburgh (here).
