Does Jimmy Carr use audience plants?
Based on questions that I’d seen coming up in Search I’ve recently written “Does Jimmy write his own jokes”? (here) and had previously tackled “Is Jimmy transphobic”? (here).
Setting posts up like this means that they are more likely to be seen by someone posing that specific question (hopefully).
This post relates to another often-discussed topic – audience plants.
Under a lot of his Heckle Amnesty videos there will frequently be someone claiming that the people shouting out ARE audience plants. Not “might be” – they “ARE”, with the usual overstated confidence of someone that has no clue.
For anyone that may not “get” what that means – the commenters are saying people are paid to be in the audience to shout out something pre-arranged, so that he can have a response prepped.
In response to these comments (usually made by people that have NEVER been to one of his shows) he does NOT use audience plants. Trust me – I’ve been there.
He’s just been doing it for almost 28 years (in 2026) and, while he’s sometimes heard the heckle before (“where’s Alan” is not as original as some people seem to think it is) it’s more a case of he’s had 10s of 1000s of hours of stage time to build his comedy muscle.
Plus, once you’ve watched enough of these videos, you can only marvel at some of the strange things that get shouted it. Frequently because drink / drugs are involved…
For example – in the 2025 Joseph Szeps pod (here) he mentioned that, a couple of nights before, a lady had shouted out and asked why he was using canned laughter. Canned laughter…at a live gig?? You have to hope it was the drink befuddling her and not an indication that she REALLY believed that.
Thinking Time
On to the people that say he repeats back what people shout to give himself thinking time.
No, sometimes he genuinely has no idea what’s been shouted out but, mostly, it’s so the rest of the people in the room know what’s been said. Making sure that everyone is on the same page.
And sometimes he’s just not entirely sure if he’s grasped what they mean and is trying to clarify.
What needs to be considered is:
- He tours 50+ countries so the recordings could be from anywhere in the world. Even in places like the UK / US (native English speakers) a strong accent can make it hard to understand what’s been shouted out.
- Some voices are louder than others.
- Then there are the drunks, struggling to form a coherent sentence.
- He’s getting shouts from all over the venue. You can often see that, by the time he’s located whereabouts the sound is coming from – it’s stopped. Try and imagine what it would be like to be on a stage, looking out at 1000’s of people and trying to figure out who just said something and where they are sitting.
- Acoustics in theatres are designed so that sound from the stage can be heard in the auditorium, not the other way around.
- I’ve been in some old, British venues (such as City Halls) where I’ve been in the balcony and the sound has been getting “caught” underneath. Making it hard to even hear Jimmy – and he’s the one wearing a mic.
- The recording equipment is often only in ONE location, near the sound board. Some venues there are more cameras on the side of or around the stage, it depends on the room layout. This is not a “professional”* Netflix special type set up with multiple camera / mic points around the room (although it’s a pretty complex one, in Arenas – see here).
- According to a source, the sound will have been enhanced in post-production. When you watch a video the clarity of the sound may be MUCH better than it was on the night. Have you ever watched one of these videos and found that the heckler suddenly sounds louder? Post production magic.
* Relating to my comment about this not being a “professional” set up (so I don’t insult Jimmy’s Tour Manager and crew). What that means is that, on tour, they are packing up and moving to a new venue on a daily basis. Because of Jimmy’s willingness to go to his audience this means they may be in an arena one night and then a 1,000 seat, 100-year-old theatre the next.
It must be one heck of an organisational feat to pack up in one place, get it all on a truck or plane and then re-assemble at the next.
I was comparing this to Netflix where, for example, they know which venue he’s going to film his next special in September 2026 (here). This means they have plenty of time to plan where cameras / sound board / cables will go. The equipment will be in place for 2 days (4 shows) and then dismantled. Making it a whole different type of project.
Finally…
To all the “they are plants” people – give the man his due for being a great comedian and fast on his feet.
Jimmy Carr does NOT use audience plants.
