Back in 2001 Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire had a venue called the Aylesbury Civic Centre Theatre, Market Square, Aylesbury, HP20 1UF (some historical details here and a picture of it here), replaced in 2010 by the more modern Aylesbury Waterside Theatre.
As the venue is long demolished there are no details of ticket prices (nor room capacity) but November 15th 2001 had the Larf Larf Comedy Club putting on a 7.30pm show featuring:
- Dara O’Briain
- Jimmy Carr
- Andrew Murrell
The venue seemed to have quite a wide variety of events on as that week also saw appearances by:
- 10th – Paul McKenna
- 11th – Aylesbury Orchestral Concert
- 13th – Fist of the Dragon (Kung Fu and Qi Gong display)
- 14th – Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel plus Sailor
- 15th – Counterfeit Stones (presumably in a different room to the comedy)
- 17th – Aylesbury Festival Choir
- 18th – The Reduced Shakespeare Company
- 20th – 911 plus special guests
When researching gigs, I have to read lots of newspaper adverts and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such a varied mix of acts.
Background
At this stage of his career Jimmy had been performing above pubs and “going on stage after strippers” (his words) so there was no tour name.
He was now starting to get more regular bookings and was appearing more in dedicated comedy clubs and slightly bigger rooms.
There is a page (here) about the UK Comedy Circuit and Pubs and Clubs 1998-2001 (here).
