Celebrity Catchphrase 2018

If you’ve never seen Catchphrase (which I think was originally an American show) I’m not sure where to start. Basically, famous sayings or catchphrases are presented as a cartoon like image and you have to buzz in with the answer.

Since 2012 it has been hosted by Stephen Mulhern and Jimmy recorded an episode in 2017, broadcast by ITV on January 6th 2018 (S5 Ep10).

The 3 contestants and the charities they were playing for:

  • Jimmy Carr – Chelsea and Westminster Hospital burns unit (website here)
  • Ellie Simmonds – Dwarf Sports Association
  • Fay Ripley – Matthew’s Friends

The only clip of the show that I can find is this Facebook post, of the incident described below. Slotting this image in so that you don’t see the spoiler, if you prefer to watch the clip.

There was a moment that caught the attention of the press where Jimmy buzzed in with “pirate videos” and then corrected himself to “pirate DVDs” (the correct answer).

As the rules say his first answer has to be the one taken, Jimmy was frozen out and it was opened up to Ellie and Fay.

Bizarrely, Ellie buzzed in with “pirate CDs” and then, to put the cherry on the cake, Fay tried with “pirate movies”. Which I can kind of see why she would say that as the video above shows that the boxes of DVDs had the word Movies showing and she’d thought that both Jimmy’s attempts were wrong.

As Stephen said “There are millions of people at home screaming” (banging his head on the set).

Still, it made for an amusing show and got a lot of publicity.

I can’t remember how much he won in the end…
