Liverpool’s Royal Albert Dock had an Edwardian Pavilion with a basement nightclub (underneath the Blue Bar & Grill) called Baby Blue. It had a seated comedy club (with a capacity of around 165) that had the bare brick walls of a cellar space.
It opened in the late 1990s (and closed in 2019 – see Chortle). Stories of its popularity tell of the crowd including people like Samuel L Jackson, Premier League footballers, Samantha Janus and Declan Donnelly.
Baby Blue was known for having comedy nights on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays and Jimmy appeared there on March 9th 2001 (Friday) and also on Saturday the 10th.
Presented by Rawhide Comedy Club the 8pm show cost £9 and the line-up was advertised as:
- Junior Simpson
- Jimmy Carr
- George Egg
- Compere – Johnny Vegas
Johnny was apparently a regular performer at this venue which, despite its popularity, was apparently finished off by the opening of another comedy club, in 2010, the Hot Water Comedy Club.
Background
At this stage of his career Jimmy had been performing above pubs and “going on stage after strippers” (his words) so there was no tour name.
He was now starting to get more regular bookings and was appearing more in dedicated comedy clubs and slightly bigger rooms.
