Monday January 11th 2016 and Jimmy was performing in Auckland, New Zealand, on his Funny Business tour. On that tour his show was a couple of hours long, with an intermission in the middle.
While off stage he found out that David Bowie had died, aged 69 (on January 10th, in New York) and Jimmy assumed that the audience would all have been checking their phones and seen the news.
Apparently, they hadn’t as there were “audible gasps”, when he announced it.
Jimmy then said:
“Looking on the plus side we’re all a little cooler now as the coolest man on Earth just died.”
And joined in a round of applause for the Thin White Duke.
Audience members later said he’d done the right thing and it would have been weird if he’d said nothing.
As a finishing tribute Jimmy left the stage as Heroes came on over the sound system. Brilliant track from 1977 (here) or from his brilliant Live Aid performance in 1985 (here).
