Secret Policeman 2012

Jimmy arrived in New York around Mar 2nd 2012 and did gigs, that night, in Gotham Comedy Club and The Comedy Cellar.

He was actually there for the event on the 4th – Amnesty International’s The Secret Policeman’s Ball at the historic Radio City Music Hall (which can hold over 6,000). Because it was Amnesty’s 50th Anniversary it had been decided to be stage the evening outside of the UK.

The Brit comics that appeared were Jimmy, Micky Flanagan, Jack Whitehall, Noel Fielding, Catherine Tate, Eddie Izzard, Russell Brand, Peter Serafinowicz, Matt Berry, David Walliams and John Oliver. This was Jimmy’s second SPB – having performed on one in 2006.

Getty Images and Alamy have some nice photos from the red carpet and there’s a diary run-down of the evening on LiveForLiveMusic.

C4 aired the special on March 9th 2012 and an overview (by Amnesty) of the success of the fundraiser found that the Friday night screening was watched by 1.38m and the Saturday repeat 153,000. The target KPI, for the UK viewing figures, was 3m. So, it fell short on that metric and by the time you get down to the report’s page 27 there are a lot of unhappy comments from people associated with Amnesty.

Unsurprisingly (going by the report tone and financial details on page 34) – this appears to have been the last SPB.
