Edinburgh 2004, Public Display of Affection

Edinburgh 2004 ran from August 8th to 30th and Jimmy attended (3rd time as a proper, solo, artist. Overall the 4th time). This was his tour: Public Display of Affection.

This year he was playing at the EICC (Edinburgh International Conference Centre) and the venue can be seen in this 2010 backstage interview.

The EICC can hold 1,300 to 2,000 people and he performed there 6 times (13th, 14th and 26th to 29th). The programme says his show started at 9pm and was an hour and 15 minutes. Tickets were £14, £12 concessionary rate.

Written and performed by: Jimmy Carr

There is an amusing review (here) where he was described as “the impeccably dressed Cabbage Patch doll of Satan”.

On the 28th he left after the EICC show and went to join in a gala show, at midnight (at the Edinburgh Playhouse) in aid of Waverley Care (an HIV and Hepatitis C charity). The show was 2.5 hours and tickets £20 (£19 concession). We can’t tell who was on the bill as the programme only lists who was at the 2003 sell-out gala (as does the 2005 Edinburgh programme).

On the 29th he was one of 14 comedians that performed in another midnight show, at Pod Deco. This one was a fundraiser for Oxfam’s Sudan appeal – see here.

The programme mentioned that Jimmy had presented Distraction, Your Face or Mine? and HIGNFY (Have I Got News For You). It also says World Premiere, although the new show had already been trialled (work in progress) at least half a dozen times, in July… at The Hen and Chickens Theatre (14th), Ealing Comedy Festival (21st) and London’s Soho Theatre (4 gigs between 23rd and 27th).

The Programme for the 2004 Fringe can be viewed here. Def worth looking at, for the pictures.

Other comedians that year (in the order that I found them in the programme) included the following – with their show name in brackets, where mentioned.

  • Jason Byrne (That’s Not a Badger)
  • Alex Horne (Every Body Talks)
  • Stephen K Amos
  • Michael McIntyre
  • Andy Parsons (Eat My Satire)
  • The Aristocrats – a Film by Paul Provenza. This is a confusing addition to the programme as all the press articles say it premiered at Edinburgh 2005 (and Jimmy attended). Did it happen in 2004 or get cancelled? See this post.
  • Danny Bhoy
  • Lee Mack
  • Scott Capurro
  • Chris Addison (Civilization)
  • David O’Doherty (World Champion of Some Things)
  • Ed Byrne (Me Again)
  • Fred MacAulay (The Fred MacAulay Show)
  • Russell Howard
  • John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman (Erm…It’s About the World…I Think You’d Better Sit Down)
  • Sarah Kendall
  • Daniel Kitson
  • Stewart Lee (Stand-Up Comedian)
  • Lucy Porter (Lady Luck)
  • Mark Watson (Mark Watson’s Overambitious 24-Hour Show)
  • Paul Foot (Simple Pleasures)
  • Milton Jones (A Rough Guide)
  • Miles Jupp (Miles Jupp Presents the Lost and Lonely Rebels)
  • Russell Brand (Russell Brand’s Better Now)
  • Russell Brand and Paul Foot (These Are Not Our Views)
  • Dara O’Briain
  • Paul Merton (Paul Merton’s Impro Chums)
  • Paul Tonkinson (War Stories)
  • John Bishop (Peddling Stories)
  • Jim Jefferies (Porn Idol)
  • Reginald D Hunter (A Mystery Wrapped in a N****)
  • Rhod Gilbert and Mark Watson are Stereocomics
  • Rob Brydon (The Keith Barret Show)
  • Ross Noble (Noodlemeister)
  • Adam Hills – only mention that I could spot was as a part of Stand Up For Freedom (Amnesty International benefit)
  • Andrew Maxwell (This Is My Home)

This blog listed some of the best jokes, from the Fringe and 3 of Jimmy’s made the list. Others featured include jokes by Marcus Brigstocke, Chris Addison (2), Scott Capurro and Milton Jones.

On July 31st 2004 Jimmy gave an interview with the Telegraph, about the upcoming Fringe, which covered:

  • A charity gig at the Albert Hall (at the end of March) is mentioned, with links to a page that no longer exists. This event was for TCT (Teenage Cancer Trust).
  • Charm Offensive, at 2003 Edinburgh, was a sell-out
  • This year’s routine has a little bit more storytelling
  • Carr is 31 now
  • Repeats the story of calling Anthony Kiedis a c**t at the Mojo awards show
  • How far removed is his comedy from Bernard Manning / Jim Davidson?
  • Taking offence on behalf of someone else
  • Saying the unsayable
  • Starting in comedy aged 26
  • US series of Distraction and 2 further pilots
