Edinburgh 2007, Repeat Offender

The 2007 Fringe (Jimmy’s 7th as a solo artist) was from August 5th to 27th. Jimmy was once again at the EICC, for 8 nights (16-19th and 23-26th). This year the gigs (Repeat Offender tour) start at 9pm. 1 hour 10 minutes and tickets £14 (concessions £12).

Written and performed by: Jimmy Carr

On the 25th August Edinburgh’s Jam House was the venue for the IF Comedy Awards (previously known as the Perrier Award). Christian Slater was presenting the awards and he attended the party afterwards. Along with Jimmy Carr, Simon Anstell and Robert Webb (and presumably the people that were nominated and/or won).

In a similar routine to 2006 he was once again at the Hen and Chickens Theatre on the 14th August. The UKTW listings said it was a Gag Reflex show, but I suspect it was more likely to have been a WIP Repeat Offender gig.

The 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Programme can be viewed here.

Below are some of the comedians that performed that year (in the order that I spotted their names in the programme). Where their show name was mentioned – it’s in brackets. Note that some people had multiple shows running.

Comedy Gala 2007

Charity gala in aid of Waverley Care (some background info on this post) this fund raiser was on August 21st at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre. Starting at 7.30pm with a £20 ticket (£19 concession) it was advertised as being a 3-hour show, hosted by Alan Carr and starring:

  • Rich Hall
  • Jimmy Carr
  • Phill Jupitus
  • Adam Hills
  • Michael McIntyre
  • Shappi Khorsandi
  • Jason Wood

The Comedy Zone

This year’s Comedy Zone (a stand-up showcase) at the Pleasance Courtyard was advertised as starring:

  • Barry Dodds
  • Carl Donnelly
  • John Robins
  • Joe Wilkinson

Page 44 has a picture of the 4 of them – odd to see Joe with short hair.

Too Big for Edinburgh?

Last year saw the first whisperings of Fringe “purists” asking if such as Jerry Sadowitz should be used to advertise the fringe instead of a big name, such as Jimmy Carr.

Sadowitz is usually talked about in reverent terms but, as he doesn’t do any TV or post online, his audience pool is small – and his comedy is even more polarising than Jimmy’s. In 2022 Sadowitz’s Edinburgh run was cancelled, AFTER he’d completed his first 75 minute gig at the Pleasance (a venue he’d appeared at since the 1980s). The audience didn’t complain – it was (allegedly) a staff member.

I digress.

The Guardian ran a piece on whether the Fringe was becoming too commercial and whether big name, stand-up comedians are drowning out “pioneering art”. I would argue that the draw of big names gets new customers up to Edinburgh and that means that smaller shows might get the spill off. Shecky makes a good argument for this rebuttal.
