Edinburgh 2024

The 2024 Edinburgh Fringe was Jimmy’s 12th appearance, with his Laughs Funny tour, at the Edinburgh Playhouse. This year the Fringe ran from August 2nd to 26th and Jimmy performed 5 shows (one gig on the 8th and 2 each on the 9th and 10th). Some heckler bantering from one of these shows, in the video below.

The show was billed as being 90 minutes and starting at 7pm and 9.30pm (on the double show nights). This year Jimmy did not have an entry / advert in the Fringe programme.

To Fringe…or Not To Fringe?

The Playhouse venue is 3,000 seats – which The Guardian / Fringe moaned about…like these 15,000 people would ALL have been inclined to spend money on seeing smaller acts. They seem to forget that people often fly in from all over the world to see (and other big comedians). They are not going to do that to spend that amount of money, to see a juggling street performer. IMHO is it not more likely that some of those people may just have a nosey around, at other acts, while they are in Edinburgh?

I think we should also check with the Guardian how many times can you be on TV before you are classed as “too big for the Fringe?”. Dara’s on TV a lot too but were his 14 nights at an 800-seat venue (11,000 ish punters) under the threshold for criticism? How about long standing TV regulars Sue Perkins and Adam Hills? Hannah Gadsby has Netflix specials – are they allowed?

Drives me nuts how “precious” (prejudiced?) they are about who can and cannot go, without getting negative press. Before I get accused of bias…remember whose career this blog is dedicated to! (I’d add a smiley but I don’t know how to on this platform…).

Having typed up the “other comedian attendees” for the 12 years that Jimmy attended – this year’s list feels a tiny bit diminished. A lot of big names are missing, quite a few people are using it for WIP gigs and some people (not listed below) I think are “returning” because their careers have stalled.

I did spot the names of a handful of comedians that have been on a couple of TV shows (QI, Cats Countdown, Battle In The Box) but, without knowing who may be future stars, it was impossible to make a selection without ending up replicating half of the programme.
