February 18th 2008 saw a 2-hour documentary broadcast on the US channel, History, and then released on DVD.
Hosted by Lewis Black – the full cast list can be viewed here. I’ll just pull out some of the more well-known names / people linked to Jimmy’s career (or idols of his).
- Dave Attell
- George Carlin
- Jimmy Carr
- Penn Jillette (and Teller)
- Bert Kreischer
- Patton Oswalt
- Iliza Shlesinger
- Robin Williams
- Gina Yashere
As happens fairly often, Jimmy is the only Brit featured (Gina has lived in NY for many years so not sure whether she still considers herself a Brit).
An attempt to find the perfect joke it apparently looks across all comedy genres – including slapstick, improv etc.
I’ve not seen this docu but most of the reviews that I glanced over described it as “not great”.
If you’re interested in the history of joke telling – I’d recommend trying The Naked Jape. It’s a book that I’ve read several times as it’s a great one for leaving bedside and dipping in and out of. Plus, there are jokes on every page and chapter end.
