On January 22nd 2009 (7-9pm) Jimmy Carr and Iain Morris filled in on BBC Radio 1 (R1) for Zane Lowe. The two friends used to present together on XFM and this just makes me want to try even harder to find some recordings!
Unfortunately, the images and track list on this BBC page no longer exist (you can download a Wallpaper though).
I can highly recommend this listen – the songs played are only the fade in / out so it’s basically Jimmy and Iain being silly for 56 minutes.
Some of the songs played / things mentioned:
- The Killers – Mr Brightside
- The Inbetweeners (Iain co-wrote this)
- Jonathan Ross – record the following day will be Tom Cruise, Lee Evans, Stephen Fry and Franz Ferdinand
- Kaiser Chiefs
- Paul Simon – 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
- Sex Pistols – Pretty Vacant
- T.I. feat Rihanna – Live Your Life
- Thom Stone
- The Strokes
- Patrick Carr (Jimmy’s younger brother)
- Justin – D.A.N.C.E.
- U2 – Get On Your Boots
- Adam Buxton – Help The Police (track played)
- The Hold Steady – Stay Positive
- Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into The Dark
- Radiohead – There There (The Boney King of Nowhere)
- Kings of Leon
- Kanye West

Hoop Dogg from the Radio 1 web team gives you a blow-by-blow account of the night’s proceedings via Twitter:
- 20:55 No tears. The pair do their final link and go out with Kanye West – “If he’s good enough for Barack, he’s good enough for you.”
- 20:52 Jimmy attempts to make Iain cry by playing Death Cab for Cutie’s ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark’
- 20:47 Text: “When I see ‘lock the taskbar’ on my computer I think of ‘Rock the Casbah’ by The Clash”
- 20:34 Overheard: “Covered in mucous? No, he was born like it” Meanwhile, Jimmy has named Sam from the show Che Guevara
- 20:32 Adam Buxton’s ‘Help the Police’ is played – possibly from a cassette by the sound of it
- 20:24 “Penguins – are they birds or fish?”
- 20:02 Jimmy muses how ‘D.A.N.C.E.’ by Justice reminds him of St Winifred’s School Choir (another 80s reference)
- 19:58 Jimmy plays a song by his little brother Patrick Carr
- 19:54 “Why are all fire engines called Dennis?”
- 19:47 Iain making references to ‘dropping the science’ but not sure what this means
- 19:34 Jimmy reveals an exclusive announcement about U2 and Glastonbury that is highly unlikely to be true so we won’t repeat it here
- 19:31 ‘Pretty Vacant’ by The Sex Pistols is Jimmy’s first ever record
- 19:26 Jimmy plays ’50 Ways to Leave Your Lover’ – a bit of Paul Simon from 1975, and wonders whether any of his listeners remember the 70s.
- 19:23 We hear Jimmy’s distinctive laugh as Iain reminisces about once falling into a gutter
- 19:17 The pair discuss stupid questions, embarrassing dads, and debate whether Zane himself is one
- 19:13 Jimmy is all about the caffeinated pop drink and coffee – perhaps his appearance on Moyles this morning means he now needs a perk-up.
- 19:10 Carr is wearing dark navy and Iain is sporting a navy T-shirt. They claim The Killers are unsigned. Jimmy says he feels old.
- 19:07 More Iain facts: He co-wrote Flight of the Conchords, and The Inbetweeners.
- 19:05 The pair are announcing who is ‘on the board’ as they demonstrate a charming misunderstanding of Zane’s catchphrases.
- 19:04 Tonight Jimmy is doing the show standing up. He’s with his friend Iain Morris. They used to present on another radio station together.
- 19:00 – Jimmy has only just started and already accused Zane of being the laziest man in the world due to his two-hour days & month-long hols
- 18:56 – Hello, hoopdogg here – eagerly anticipating the start of the show… and the great news is that Jimmy Carr is actually here!
