For anyone that isn’t aware – Artificial Intelligence has brought us a new term: AI slop.
Slop is a particular issue with Images, Music and Videos, where AI is used to mass produce low-quality rubbish with the sole aim of making easy money. It’s used for text too – but slop is mainly infesting YouTube, TikTok and Instagram with content that generates clicks and income.
I’ve seen investigations (examples here and here) that show how fake bands have been created and, fooled a %age of the population into thinking that they are real. In extreme cases the issue has been exacerbated by bots being used to promote the content, pushing it viral and out performing real artists.
A lot of people are finding it hard to spot reality now…and we even have “work slop” to contend with.
In relation to comedy one of the things to watch out for is books on Amazon (although, lately, Amazon is reacting faster and taking them down).
As an example – there was a book called Henning Wehn and Jimmy Carr: The Shocking Truth. I’m not sure why the 2 of them would be in a book together but that one was £10.33 for a 92-page paperback. Produced in 2020 it had an author of Kenneth Rogers and, if you look at this profile, there are a LOT of similar format books, for various stars. Thankfully I think the price put most people off.
A book with the same cover / title had been produced under the name Vincent Price, in 2019, but at only 66 pages long.
As they are older titles (more recent ones have vanished) I’m not sure whether they are ACTUAL slop, or just assimilations of Jimmy’s bio information. I’m just using them as an example of cheap knockoffs to watch out for.
One issue with this blog is that I can foresee, at some point, the information within it being hoovered up. Copyright / stealing someone else’s effort doesn’t seem to matter anymore and I see people downloading Jimmy’s stand-up videos and reuploading them (to their own channels) on a daily basis.
And one other thing to watch out for is websites that produce comedy “in the style of”. I saw one a couple of days ago that had an AI approximation of Jimmy’s face and said, in a smallish font, that the jokes listed were “in the style of”. But not everyone will have noticed that and realised that it’s auto generated slop.
Once you can recognise slop it’s quite depressing when you see how much of it there is about.
Don’t be fooled…stick with the original!
Jimmy’s official accounts, website and YouTube channels are all listed on the Menu page – here.
