This post had originally been published in April but, as I had a lot of information to add, it was simpler to just delete and start over.
I’d also add that, if you see a cheap version of this DVD, I think it’s worth buying it – just to listen to the half hour of XFM Highlights (see below).
I digress.
Jimmy’s 2nd DVD release, Stand up, was released November 17th 2005. Although the actual show is 1 hour and 20 minutes long – there is also a whopping 90 minutes of bonus material (most of it online, as I’ve indicated).
Recorded at Bloomsbury Theatre, London, on 23rd and 24th July 2005 the material is from the tour A Public Display of Affection. All details on Jimmy’s tours can be found here.
- Written and performed by: Jimmy Carr
- Producer: Sam Pinnell
- Director: Dominic Brigstocke
- Executive Producers: Iain Morris & Damon Beesley
For details of how well this DVD charted, in 2005, see here. And there’s a short post about a 3-City signing session – here.
In September 2026 a compilation video was published – with clips from this DVD’s Extras. See here.
There is a flyer inside the DVD (DVD box size) that is the same as the front of the DVD cover. The flip side has a bulleted list of the titles of 15 scenes (headed Scene Selection) and a list of the 4 extras.

The DVD Menu function is unusual in that Jimmy is prancing around, waving and pointing at various items as he tries to persuade you to try them.

All the while chatting away and sometimes, he has his back to camera and turns back to flick a V, or mouths f*** off. It loops back around eventually but it definitely makes going back to the menu less boring.

The DVD also has Subtitles, with a choice of Queens English, Cockney, Yorkshire or Scottish.
With it set to Yorkshire, for example, in the part of the stand-up routing about “f**k buddies” when Jimmy says “how very modern” the subtitles say “ow bang up to date”. Silly!
And, if you choose Scene Selection, Jimmy appears in a different suit – while the now “little Jimmy” carries on waving and being daft, in the background.

Bonus Material
- Comedy Idol – Jimmy decided to try a comedy competition where would-be comics got to try out a routine in front of Jimmy (and 2 other judges –Iain Morris and Karen Taylor) at London’s Comedy Store. Apart from the experience (and getting some advice) the winner got to be Jimmy’s support act, on the DVD record. And, for better or worse, some clips made the DVD. 51 minutes. The full Comedy Idol show (51 minutes) can be watched here.
- There’s a Comedy Idol “Easter Egg” in that there’s additional footage hidden away. When in various menu levels the large header text starts to flash and, if you use the LEFT button on your DVD control, some footage launches. There are 3 bonus scenes, from Comedy Idol, like this. In the image below you can see that the header text is flashing pink.
- Comedy Central Special – Jimmy filmed 2 specials for Comedy Central and here is the 2005 one. See here.
- Top Gear Interview – Jimmy sat down with Jeremy Clarkson to discuss being the fastest celebrity around the Top Gear track. This was from Top Gear 2004 November 14, S5 Ep4. At the time it was originally watched by 4.44m viewers. See here.
- XFM Commentary – 30 minutes of Jimmy and Iain Morris, from their Sunday Morning XFM show. This is the only part not available elsewhere.

I’d never listened to this XFM section before – loved it. Audio clips of Jimmy and Iain talking nonsense, generally being silly and bantering back and forth, including:
- Swapping stories of talking posh at football matches etc.
- Jimmy had been to a Paul McKenna party
- He’d been watching CSI (because Karoline likes it) and he now thinks he know how to commit the perfect murder (but wouldn’t tell how he was going to do it)
- Jimmy said JK Rowling had sold 10m books “this weekend” and, as they had 2 hours of the show left, they should write a book, putting Harry Potter in a Comprehensive school. They gave it a few seconds consideration and decided it might be hard work.
- The clips are all from random shows and there was a mention of something that they’d obviously discussed before – that the 2 of them have formed a band, which is called Shut Farm Gates
- Jimmy had been at the Royal Variety and made a social faux pas while chatting to someone at the side of the stage (before going on for the rehearsal) and realised later that he’d not recognised Jamelia.
- Iain said Jimmy was gay for buying a pink TV from Woolworths (for a Christmas present)
- Jimmy told a story about how he’d seen some people that looked like Goths hanging around outside a York gig, in the cold. They said they were waiting for the show as, having bought tickets, they had no money left. He gave them money to go to the pub and, when he had a gig in Leeds, they came to give him the money back (they insisted on repaying him).
- Jimmy said, when he was a kid, lots of his pets “went to farms” after Iain gave out advice on caring for a Tortoise.
If these two were still on the radio I would actually listen!!
