Daniel Sloss is in a short video, here, talking about his first appearance on 8 Out of 10 Cats (2010, S10 Ep3 – here). It starts with some phrases, from the interview, designed to reel you in – which is superfluous on something so short and just makes it all a bit garbled (but it’s only a couple of minutes long, so bear with it).

Daniel was 20 at the time (the record was shortly after his birthday) and had been surprised when he’d bumped into Jimmy and that, firstly, Jimmy knew his name and then because he’d invited him onto the show.

This show was half scripted and half improvised and he talks first of all about Jason Manford trying to help him out, after a couple of his jokes had bombed.

Cats was a topical, weekly panel show and they were told what was expected to come up so they could prep some jokes. Jason, tapped Daniel’s notes and then fed him a punchline to let him then get in one of his prepped jokes.

The editing is a bit rubbish but when he says, towards the end, “he would not let me go like 2 questions without being like and Daniel what do you think” he’s referring to Jimmy. That bit follows straight on from the Jason story and the crop makes it sound like it’s about Jason – until Daniel follows on with “he’s also the reason I got on”.

So, the clip is a bit confusing but is basically a nice story about 2 “elder statesman” comedians supporting a new boy.

As the host of the show, it was Jimmy’s job to make the best show possible and other people have commented that he is a generous host, in that he will always try to help them to give a good performance.
