British Comedy Awards 2005

December 14th 2005 was the British Comedy Awards, held at London Television Studios, South Bank.

Jimmy and Karoline attended (Getty Images here and here) on what looks like a windy evening.

Hosted by Jonathan Ross the full list of nominees and winners are here.

The broadcast on ITV1 this year was remembered for voting irregularity. Ant and Dec were announced as having won the People’s Choice Award, during the live show, but the phone lines had not been closed and people carried on registering votes (which apparently had also happened in 2004).

OFCOM levied a fine of £80,000 as the phone numbers were premium rate. Oddly this story says that OFCOM had spent £250,000 over 2.5 years and “still not been able to establish the facts”.

This problem apparently arose because the broadcast had to be interrupted for the 10.30pm news and so the final 30 minutes (of the comedy awards) were pre-recorded – but still shown “as live”. Which I take to mean that the awards carried on during the News bulletin and then broadcast on a delay.

The most votes had eventually gone to The Catherine Tate Show and, in 2008, Ant and Dec gave their award back.
