Your Face or Mine (YFOM) was a really early hit show, in Jimmy’s career. Series 1, Episode 1 was shown on September 2nd 2002 and he co-hosted with June Sarpong.

In 2002-3 E4 broadcast a whopping 50 half hour episodes, across 2 seasons (IMDB). This TV Maze listing gives an at-a-glance view of how it was blasted out nightly.

It was later shown as repeats on C4 and 4Music.

Format?

I’ve not seen this early version but, based on the 2017 reboot (with Katherine Ryan) it’s a slightly trashy guilty pleasure. Described as shallow, because it’s very much about looks, every series has never failed to attract couples that want to win the cash prize. Even if they are risking having an almighty row on the way home.

They bank cash in each round and are then given a final “double or nothing” challenge, at the end.

Rounds are along the lines of:

  • R1. Being shown images of 2 celebrities (often that look quite similar to each other) and trying to guess which one the audience voted as better looking
  • R2. Being shown their own photos (alongside someone else’s) and having to decide who the audience thinks is better looking – this is where egos start to get bruised
  • R3 and things can get hairy as a mystery guest is brought on and these guests usually include an ex-partner, close friend, work colleague etc. It gets awkward as the person that knows the mystery person has to judge the looks of their current partner – as in “who is better looking”. The question is, for example, do you say your “ex” is better looking than your “current” if it means winning more cash?
  • The double or nothing round involves the couple deciding which of them is better looking

If these shows had the same vibe as the reboot – they were full of teasing and flirting and and often ends up most cringey when someone with a lot of confidence (in their own attractiveness) has their ego punctured, when the audience decides that their partner is better looking.

Details / clips of the 2017-19 shows (66 episodes) are here.

Where to watch?

More4 don’t seem to have it available and no one has ever posted clips on YouTube.

Sky Go seems to have it listed, but I haven’t tried to launch it.

Amazon Prime UK still shows it in their listing – but the rights have expired, so it cannot be viewed.
