Having attended the first biennial Netflix is a Joke Fest in 2022, Jimmy Carr was back again for JokeFest 2024.
He’d already been Stateside in March with what was billed as his Terribly Funny 2.0 tour. Back in the UK, in May, he was then on his Laughs Funny tour. As he was switching tours over this means some of the TF gigs may have had some LF material in them, being tried out.
This Los Angeles comedy festival ran from May 2nd to 12th.
A photographer (Van Corona) took many mainly b/w pics at the festival, so there are a good few links to his Instagram account. Because he has a tendency to upload multiple images, at the end of each night, I have noted which position a Jimmy picture appears, in the carousel.
The events detailed below are the ones that I spotted photos / stories for – but there will have been many more. Most nights Jimmy would have ended up at The Comedy Store, either hanging out with other comedians and/or performing. Unless someone posts a picture on Instagram etc. – then it goes unnoticed.
4th May / Brunch date
After a UK gig on May 3rd – he was in Los Angeles by the 4th and straight to a brunch at the home of Netflix co-CEO (Ted Sarandos). This recap article link is topped with an image and Jimmy (front, left) is the lone Brit. Bert Kreischer is in the pool and Sarandos is to the right of him.
4th May / Hollywood Palladium, Outside Joke
And then it was on to the Hollywood Palladium to be one of the acts on Outside Joke – which was described as an outdoor comedy hub in the grounds of the Palladium.
Getty Images have 3 Jimmy pics here – and then 6 pages of pictures of the Outside Joke events, including Jim Jefferies, Jeff Ross, Nikki Glaser, Ron Funches, Moshe Kasher, Rob Lowe etc..
5th May / Roast of Tom Brady
This was billed as the GROAT (Greatest Roast of All Time) but, speaking as a Brit, it really wasn’t good. Just my personal view but I had no idea who any of the (American) Football stars were or the back story to a lot of the jokes. Plus, it really dragged because the audience wanted to whoop and clap everything, so a lot of “dead air” from a comedy perspective.
The cameras picked Jimmy out, in the crowd, several times.
Howie Mandel posted this backstage pic of (L-to-r) Tony Hinchcliffe, Jimmy Carr, Whitney Cummings, Jeff Ross, Pauly Shore, Howie, Arsenio Hall. For anyone that doesn’t know – Pauly is the son of Mitzi Shore (The Comedy Store).
Judging by the footage on the red carpet it was held in the afternoon and I’ve posted about it here.
5th May / Comedy Store, Original Room
According to some comments / posts (social media) The Comedy Store, on the 5th, saw performances by:
- Mark Normand
- Jimmy Carr
- John Mulaney
- Erik Griffin
This was born out by this podcast (Mark Normand and Joe List). From 44mins to about 48 Mark talks about being in the OR (Original Room) and having a bad set (he was drunk). And about how he was then followed by Mulaney and how good he was and realising that he needs to get his stuff together.
And then he said Jimmy came on – professional, suit on, one liners, pitch perfect and Mark said it was an eye opener that this is why these guys are so great and going to have big careers.
I’m not sure about the “going to have” – both JM and JC already HAVE big careers.

Pics include Chappelle, Shane Gillis, Jeff Ross, Tony Hinchcliffe, Bert Kreischer – Image 8 is a nice one featuring Mark Normand and Jimmy.
6th May / Comedy Store, Main Room
On the 6th Jimmy was in The Comedy Store Main Room, watching Adam Ray’s Dr Phil Live (started at 7.30pm).
Adam Ray is a comedian and it seems various comedians get involved in each of these shows, joining him on stage as if they were guests of the real Dr Phil (judging by the Playlist on his channel).
This May 6th show is here and features:
- Bert Kreischer
- Mark Normand
- Dr Pimple Popper
- Johnny Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls)
- Tony Hinchcliffe

6th May / Late Night @ Hollywood Palladium
Late Night at The Hollywood Palladium, hosted by Gabriel Iglesias
This show started at 10.30pm and, according to 800poundgorillamedia, the acts included (in no particular order):
- Jimmy Carr
- Matt Rife
- Deon Cole
- Heather McMahan
- Liza Treyger
And then Gabriel came on and did over an hour.

6th May / Comedy Store
Not sure whether this was before or after the Gabriel Iglesias show (above).

7th May / Roast Battle at The Comedy Store
The Roast Battle: A Decade of Destruction tournament was held at The Comedy Store on the 7th. I’ve watched a fair few Roast Battles and this is possibly my least favourite. Partly because they were all unknowns (and a couple of people bombed and looked so uncomfortable that I was squirming) and partly because of Sam Jay (in the red hat). Read the comments and you will get an idea.
- Jeff Ross
- Tony Hinchcliffe
- Jimmy Carr
- Brian Simpson
- Sam Jay
- Mike Lawrence
- Frank Castillo
- Post Malone
The start of the 55-minute video is here. And Jimmy arrives at 11.27 – here.

8th May / Breaking Bread with Tom Papa
Tom Papa has a Podcast and Jimmy filmed an episode during the day of the 8th. See here.
8th May / Laughs Funny
The Theatre at Ace Hotel (renamed to United Theatre, Broadway) was the venue for what was a gig on Jimmy’s Laughs Funny tour.
Halfway through the gig a siren started and no one seemed inclined to move. Jimmy was asking if he should “soldier on” and was it the Zombie apocalypse. Eventually it was turned off.
Weird to see, on the Live Nation promo stuff, “masks encouraged”. Masks in 2024?? Tickets apparently started at $54.

10th May / The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon
May 10th and Jimmy had to travel to New York (Rockefeller Centre) to record The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Then back to the UK, try and get over the jet lag, and off to Wales, for Laughs Funny gigs.
Also there…
