Watford’s venue loss 2004

Browsing the British Newspaper Archive (here) for 2004 I spotted a little article from The Stage (July 15th edition). And then found a piece in Chortle (here).

Jimmy was on his Public Display of Affection tour (here) and booked to play the Watford Colosseum on July 17th.

Unfortunately, with only a week to go the venue went into administration. Something which happened (and is still happening) all too frequently to these small venues.

Doing the honourable thing Jimmy’s booking team managed to get Rickmansworth’s Watersmeet Theatre for the 18th and ticket holders were offered the new date as there was not a refund option. Tickets at that point were £14.

At 481 seats the new venue was smaller than the Colosseum’s 1,400 capacity and so it was a “first come, first served” on the replacement date.

You do wonder, as it was 2004, how many people didn’t get to hear about all of this. T’internet was not as embedded in our lives back then and I could imagine there were a few disappointed punters – especially as the Watersmeet was so much smaller. Not to mention the poor people that lost their jobs / business.

Still, well done him for making the effort.
