January 5th 2002 and Jimmy had a gig at Up The Creek Too. He’d been performing over the New Year period (see in this previous post) and now he was headlining a gig that was MC’d by Kevin McCarthy. The evening was advertised as doors open 7pm (Crawley & District Observer said 8.30pm) and tickets were £14 or £10 concessionary.
Acts listed as appearing were:
- Jimmy Carr
- Paul Chowdhry
- Ian Cognito
The address of this first venue was Up The Creek Too Comedy Cabaret Club, 3 Brighton Road, South Croydon. There was another gig advertised that night for Up The Creek Comedy Cabaret Club, 302 Creek Road, Greenwich.
Acts on the 2nd show were
- Ian Cognito
- Tom Rhodes
- Jimmy Carr
These 2 venues are about 22 minutes apart (if Google is to be believed) if you go by train and tube (almost an hour if you drive).
I’m making the assumption that the reversal of Jimmy and Ian’s names would suggest that they both did both gigs…and then passed like ships in the night, as they raced to the other venue.
This second article (here) only lists the 1 gig, so who knows.
There is a picture of the inside of Up The Creek (Greenwich) here.
Who else was gigging that weekend?
Other gigs that were listed on January 4th support my theory of comics being booked to play at both venues in one night.
- Up The Creek (Greenwich) – Andrew Maxwell, Howerd Read (their spelling) and Addy Borg
- Up The Creek Too (Croydon) – Addy Borg, Alistair Barrie, Andrew Maxwell
Also, on the 4th The Banana Cabaret had 4 comics on the bill, from 9pm, at The Bedford, 77 Bedford Hill, Balham.
Boothby Graffoe, Noel Britten, Anthony King and Michael McIntyre
That evening’s tickets were £10 / £7 concessionary but the same venue / line-up on Saturday 5th was £13 / £8 concessionary.
On Sunday 6th Comedy Pit at the Canterbury, The Queen, Bellfield Road, Brixton had:
Tim Vine, Paul Shuff, Donna Withers, David Bloom and Rob Deb
The 9pm show was priced at £5, £4 concessionary.
