1998 2nd gig, Up The Creek

Time to pick the bones out of the available information, relating to Jimmy’s second ever gig.

In the London area there are 2 clubs with very similar names:

  • Up The Creek – Comedy Cabaret Club, 302 Creek Road, Greenwich, SE10 9SW
  • Up The Creek Too – Comedy Cabaret Club, 3 Brighton Road, South Croydon

And Jimmy used to play both (see the Early Gigs tag or browse the UK Comedy Circuit page (here).

Overviews of the 1998-2001 Pub and Club dates (here) show that Jimmy’s first gig was the Tut ‘n’ Shive and he’s said that his second gig was at Up The Creek (see this interview) which was Malcolm Hardee’s club.

That chat with Stuart Goldsmith does muddy the waters somewhat as, for this to have been his 2nd ever gig, it must have been 1998 (at a push very early 1999). But Stuart is referring to him playing the Malcolm Hardee Benefit gig and being booed ON to the stage.

The story about the night with the boo’ing was in 2006 (here) and that benefit was held at the Hackney Empire. There had been a tribute show 12 months before (here) at Up The Creek but that wasn’t the one that was documented as being rowdy. Regardless – 2005-6 was WAY too late to be a 2nd gig.

My research, so far, has found eight, properly documented, Up The Creek, Greenwich appearances:

  • 2000 (1)
  • 2001 (4)
  • 2002 (2)
  • 2005 (1)

None of these could be labelled as his “2nd gig”.

In this NME interview from 2015 (here) he again mentions his 2nd gig as being Up The Creek, when asked what’s been his worst ever. He says that he got heckled OFF (note – off, not ON) – but no mention of when it was or any sort of tie in reference, to the tribute shows.

Jimmy has had a long and exciting career so I think we will have to excuse him being a little vague, in relation to what year these old gigs were.

Internal images of the venue can be seen – here – and the capacity is 275 people seated.
