Which comedians were selling the most DVDs in the UK in 2009?

Jimmy’s fifth DVD, Telling Jokes, was released November 2nd 2009 (here) and the material is from the tour Joke Technician.

The highest UK chart position, for this DVD, was #16 – making it his most successful DVD to date.

Official Charts (UK)

The Official Charts website has the Telling Jokes DVD chart data – here.

Their data for all DVD sales (not just comedy) says:

  • This title charted for 11 weeks between November 14 2009 and January 23rd 2010
  • Entered the charts at #16, its highest position
  • Was in the Top 100 for 11 weeks
  • Was in the Top 75 for 10 weeks
  • Was in the Top 40 for 3 weeks
  • Was in the Top 20 for 1 week

The other stand-up comedy releases (not TV shows) on that November 14th chart are below (with the highest position in brackets).

  • Jimmy Carr – Telling Jokes #16 (#16)
  • Frankie Boyle – Live #69 (#8)

If we move forward to the results for January 2nd 2010, we can see the post-Christmas sales impact.

Amazon

I’m going to have to give up looking at the Amazon website version (here) as all of their charts seem to have numbers missing (with this year – just 49-50 missing).

Using the Bestseller website (here) which says it is data, from Amazon, for the whole of 2009:

  • Micheal McIntyre – Hello Wembley #1
  • Michael McIntyre – Live & Laughing #29
  • Rhod Gilbert – Rhod Gilbert & The Award Winning Mince Pie #43
  • Frankie Boyle – Live #57
  • Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra #94

As I mentioned on the 2004 chart page (for the Live DVD) back in 2009 most people would buy their DVDs from stores like Woolworths or record shops (like HMV).

Which means the UK Charts section (above) represent all sales EXCEPT for Amazon.
