The clip below is from the Szeps 2026 podcast (here) but I think it’s a perfect illustration on how so much of the population just assumes that everything is FAKE. And maybe also how many drink too much at shows…
Jimmy is talking about someone, in a live comedy gig, that thought he was piping canned laughter in. Which, coincidentally, ties in with something that is frequently stated under heckle clip comments – that the show laughter is added (or boosted) afterwards.
That and Jimmy being accused of repeating stuff back to give him “thinking time” (discussed on this post).
These crowd work videos are not Netflix special standard in that they don’t have cameras and mics all around the room.
The footage from the shows goes to be “tarted up” (post production thing). Sound levels are adjusted, for example, and sometimes, in compilations, one heckle will come on louder than the audio levels set for the rest of the video.
Give the man some credit – after the best part of 3 decades he doesn’t need to add a laugh track. Although he is probably thankful that he doesn’t have a room full of us “silent laughers”.
Now THAT, would be a problem.
Other “myth busting” posts are under the video.
