XFM Radio 2001

This story is proving really hard to nail down, in relation to when the show started and the total of how many episodes Jimmy (and Iain Morris) actually co-hosted. I suspect that this is all that I’m going to find.

Part of the problem is that XFM (which was really just a London station, rather than a National) was re-branded as Radio X in 2015. It apparently became more male focussed (in its target demographic) and brought in DJs like Chris Moyles and Johnny Vaughan.

Stories that are pre 2015 often have links to the XFM website, which redirects to https://www.radiox.co.uk/  (meaning all of the old information is lost).

The XFM station had helped in launching the careers of, amongst others:

And this Medium.com article also lists

  • Dermot O’Leary
  • Zoe Ball
  • Simon Pegg
  • Tim Lovejoy
  • Zane Lowe.

That’s an awful lot of future stars of TV and Radio for a regional “London radio channel”. Plus, you can also see within those lists the names of a lot of people that Jimmy would go on to work with – guesting on each other’s TV / Radio shows etc.

So far as I can tell: Jimmy Carr and Iain Morris had an XFM Sunday morning radio show that ran from 2001 to July 2006.

Some of the conflicting information:

  • Bing said that it was 2001 to 2005 but I found several mentions (an NME article and Reddit and Digital Spy forums) of Jimmy ending up, in 2006, only being able to fit in an appearance “once every 3 or 4 weeks” – but still being on it until July. And this June 2006 Art of Noise blogspot has a writer mentioning “still listening to JC and IM being fantastic every Sunday”.
  • The AI Overview (image below, from Google) is completely mixing up this Carr-Morris show with the Gervais-Merchant show (here). Nowhere else is the Carr-Morris pairing mentioned before 2001, so I think that can safely be ignored.

What I was able to find out was…

Bio information for Iain Morris describes the show as being 3 hours long and famous for its “shabby prize giveaways, inane ramblings and regular diatribes against Keane”.

Bio information for Natasha Desborough says that she “co-presented the XFM Sunday morning show with Jimmy Carr”. When this was and where Iain was…who knows?

On Jimmy’s DVD Stand Up (here) there is a 30-minute compilation of the audio clips of the 2 of them. I’ve added some info (in that link) of the kinds of stuff they were chattering about, in between playing recorded and reading out texts. Would love to hear more…

There is a 15 minute clip of the April 17th 2005 episode in this post here.

In this 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast Jimmy mentions that Karl Pilkington used to be a Producer at XFM and, as related background info, there is a ton of stuff about the early link up between Karl, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant in The Pilkipedia.

Below is the aforementioned mixed up Google AI nonsense text:
