Terribly Funny (& 2.0) Tours

In 2019 Jimmy was still (in some parts of the world) on The Best of Ultimate Gold Greatest Hits tour, that he’d started way back in May 2016.

The next tour was going to be Terribly Funny, which would eventually have to be rewritten and relaunched as Terribly Funny 2.0.

Details of the tour programme can be seen here.

The full list of Jimmy’s tours and links to posts can be seen here.

Work In Progress (WIP) 2019

The earliest WIP gigs that I spotted started being advertised in February 2019. There may have been a couple more but the ones below were the ones that I saw promoted as being £21.50 per person WIP gigs. Show duration was 90 minutes plus interval.

  • February 7th – Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford (capacity 535)
  • February 11th – Princes Hall, Aldershot (capacity 590)
  • February 18th – Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford (capacity 535)
  • February 27th – Harrow Arts Centre, Harrow (capacity 438)
  • March 2nd – Oakengates Theatre, Telford (capacity 600)
  • March 5th & 9th – Pleasance, London (capacity 772)
  • March 22nd – Woodville Halls, Gravesend (capacity 810)
  • April 5th – West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge (capacity 499 x 2 shows)
  • April 7th – Rose Theatre, Kingston (capacity around 800)
  • April 8th – Palace Theatre, Newark (capacity 630)
  • April 12th – Civic Theatre, Chelmsford (capacity 502)
  • April 13th – Blackheath Halls, London (capacity 600 x 2 shows)
  • April 14th – Civic Hall, Grays (capacity 750)
  • April 24th – Corn Exchange, Newbury (capacity 400 x 2 shows)

The April 8th show reported selling out within 38 minutes and, on the one hand, some may think “that’s not that fast”. To put it in perspective, though, WIP gigs are not usually publicised that far ahead and you have to know where to look out for them.

Terribly Funny May 2019

The tour proper started on May 1st in Crawley and this year just featured gigs across England, Scotland and Wales. I bet if he’d know what was coming in 2020, he’d have crammed in more trips abroad.

The imagery for this tour was blue text on a silver background and, in the original TF version, a blue suit. Below is a throwback screenshot of how JimmyCarr.com was branded at the time.

And the new imagery was updated across all of his social accounts – Instagram below.

Terribly Funny 2020

2020 saw the tour cover England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Greece and the UAE.

I’m sure I don’t need to remind you that this was the year that lockdowns played havoc with everyone’s lives and, because there is a lot of information, I’ve written about the period up to September 17th in this lockdowns post – here. And then the remainder of 2020 is in this post here.

By my estimates over 230 gigs, just during 2020, were set up and then postponed into 2021. That was a LOT of wasted effort on behalf of both the bookers in his tour team but also the box offices in the venues.

Terribly Funny 2021

2021 pretty much began as 2020 had ended. Various places (including Stereoboard) announced a long list of gigs, that were planned for 2021-2. But, once again, over 200 gigs had to be postponed due to either “tier 4 restrictions” or “lockdown 3.0”. Any that did manage to go ahead this year were either in open air locations or under social distancing restrictions. And he didn’t manage to get outside of the British Isles.

A blog post for “lockdowns 2021” is in progress so more specific details will be in there.

From a tour perspective the first time Jimmy got on stage was June 6th. He last performed on December 17th 2020 so that was near enough a full 6 months with no audience.

Netflix Show / His Dark Material 2021

On July 31st 2021 and August 1st, the gigs in Southend-on-Sea were recorded for the next Netflix Special, which would be His Dark Material (here). This was released on Netflix on Christmas Day 2021.

Work In Progress (WIP) 2021

Despite not performing at his usual pace, during 2020-1, by September Jimmy had committed the Terribly Funny material “to tape” and so needed a new show (for the performances that would continue after the Christmas Day broadcast).

As mentioned in the HDM post (here) there was a bit of a kerfuffle over one of the jokes – but this was a joke that had been in the show since February 2019. No one had a problem with it until was streamed and then clips (edited to only show half of the joke) dumped out to social platforms.

I can’t estimate the capacity on these WIP gigs as it’s impossible to know how many seats were removed, to satisfy whatever mandates were in place that week. But they would normally have averaged 500 to 1,100.

  • September 22nd – Soho Theatre
  • October 2nd – Soho Theatre
  • October 21st – Princes Hall, Aldershot
  • November 15th – Harrow Arts Centre
  • November 22nd – Beck Theatre, Hayes
  • December 8th – Civic Hall, Grays
  • December 9th – Telford Theatre
  • December 11th – Marina Theatre, Lowestoft

On December 28th 2021 the promo below was released, for Terribly Funny 2.0. The promos were to make it clear that, despite the almost identical name, this was all brand new material.

Terribly Funny 2.0 / 2022

Running into 2022 there were still a small number of gigs being cancelled for “pandemic” reasons. By now it was only a trickle but sadly we now had venues falling into liquidation.

The programmes for the original TF were still in use and the backdrop, for the stage show, was the same blue on silver.

Jimmy had had his lockdown hair transplant so he underwent a new photoshoot and the promo images for TF 2.0 were of him wearing a blue jacket.

Social accounts were all updated as per this example of the YouTube strap banner (which was from 2023 – but you get the idea).

Terribly Funny 2.0 started on January 19th 2022 in the Assembly Hall, Tunbridge Wells. Finally, travel was back on and, perhaps a little tentatively, shows were booked abroad. After all of the cancellations of the past 2 years everyone in the industry must have been really wary of restrictions being re-applied.

TF 2.0 (in 2022) managed to get out to places such as:

  • Iceland – March
  • USA – April (Netflix is a Joke Fest – here)
  • Denmark – June
  • Sweden – June and October and December
  • Norway – June and August and September and November and December
  • Italy – July
  • Canada – July (JFL – here)
  • Austria – September
  • Netherlands – September and October
  • Belgium – September
  • Portugal – September
  • Malta – October
  • Gibraltar – October
  • Estonia – October
  • Finland – October
  • Romania – October
  • Bulgaria – October
  • Denmark – October and November
  • Croatia – November
  • Serbia – November

The last gig for 2022 was the one in Bergen, Norway on December 22nd (two shows). The Norwegians got more than their fair share of gigs this year (kidding).

This was an impressive 23 countries and 225 shows for the year. Not impressive as in “hardest working man in comedy” level of impressive – just compared to all the issues of the 2 years before.

Terribly Funny 2.0 / 2023

This feels like a never-ending tour, due to the name change and all of the postponements and cancellations. But 2023 felt like a (final) complete return to normalcy.

It started out, January 7th, at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. We still have the COVID hangover messages in that the “before you come to the venue” type blurb mentioned masks (but it did at least say that they were optional).

He sat down in the office of Chambers Management to (presumably) record the video promos for various places…and this one was for the Etihad.

Aus & NZ 2023

Straight after the UAE he headed to New Zealand (first gig of 29 on the 10th).

February 2nd was Australia’s turn and, until May 7th, he was back and forth (performing UK gigs in between the Aus tour legs). Over this part of the tour he performed 54 Australian shows to around 245,000 people.

See also this story about the March gig in Wollongong.

Plus, he supported Dave Chappelle on the 12th of Feb, in front of another 15k crowd. Read more about that here.

Canada 2023

Canada got their turn in June (15th to 26th). A relatively short tour of around 17 gigs, 55k tickets.

UK & TV 2023

The period up to the end of August was back home – appearing in England, Scotland and Wales.

I Literally Just Told You (ILJTY) S3 was filmed July 25th and he took a rare day off in August to see The Killers (here).

Netherlands & France

September was home gigs again – but with 2 arena shows in the Netherlands covering almost 9k tickets. And September 20th saw him playing Paris for the first time (le Grand Rex).

USA, Greece & Cyprus

The last 3 months of the year saw him spending more time than he ever had before in the US. Oct, Nov and Dec saw him perform 36 gigs, record several podcasts and he represented the UK (again) as the only Brit on Stand Up For Heroes (here). He also dropped in on The Comedy Store, LA a couple of times (as an alumnus he has an open invitation to perform at any time – see here).

Greece got 3 shows in November (24th & 25th) and Cyprus had their first ever show (26th).

As before – in between all of the trips abroad he was back and forth, to the UK, for more gigs in England and Wales.

The last gig of 2023 was at the Pavilions in Plymouth on December 22nd. This was the 293rd show of the year – covering 145 cities, 12 countries, 4 continents.

Terribly Funny 2.0 / 2024

January saw Jimmy go to parts of Southeast Asia that he’d not visited before (and a couple of places that were return visits).

  • Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur
  • Singapore
  • Hong Kong – Kowloon Bay
  • India – New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru
  • Indonesia – Jakarta and Bali
  • Thailand – Bangkok
  • Japan – Tokyo

These 14 shows took him up to the 29th of January and then, February, it was back to Europe to hit:

  • England
  • Switzerland
  • Czechia
  • Poland

February to April also saw him doing WIP gigs, in England, for his next tour (Laughs Funny).

March was lots of travel again…

  • South Africa – Pretoria and Cape Town
  • Turkey – Istanbul
  • Hungary – Budapest
  • Austria – Vienna (it means nothing to me…)
  • England & Wales
  • USA (more podcasts and 14 gigs)

The last Terribly Funny 2.0 shows were April 13th and 14th – in Hungary (Budapest) and Germany (Berlin).

Jimmy’s next Netflix Special (Natural Born Killerhere) was scheduled for April 16th and so TF 2.0 carried on up until the April 14th gig and then we were off to the races with Laughs Funny.

And finally….

From the first WIP gigs on February 7th 2019 to April 14th 2024 had been a whopping 933 shows across 45 countries on 5 different continents.

It’s been said before…hardest working man in comedy. Even during a pandemic!
