Up The Creek 2001 06 08

In this post (here) about where Jimmy’s 2nd gig may have been you can see that Up The Creek (Greenwich) and Up The Creek Too (Croydon) are completely different places. In this 2002 post I wrote about how they are about 22 minutes apart (by tube and train) or an hour by car.

With the close proximity of many of these London venues the comics would dash around and do 2-3 gigs a night. This means that the order in which a bill is listed does not necessarily denote a headliner – it just depends on what time each person could get there. If some is indicated as a headliner, on any gig, it will be mentioned.

This post is about a gig at the 300-ish capacity venue Up The Creek (Greenwich) on Friday June 8th 2001.

The 8pm show had tickets at £10 / £6 (concessionary) and the acts were:

  • Man With a Beard
  • Jimmy Carr
  • Dylan
  • Ira Rainer
  • Milton Jones

Milton went on to become a stalwart of the UK TV show Mock The Week.

Who else was gigging?

That week’s listing also showed the gigs below:

On Saturday June 9th Up The Creek (Greenwich) had a 7pm show at £14 / £10 featuring:

  • Stu Hu
  • Boothby Graffoe
  • Raymond and Mr Timkin’s Revue
  • Simon Bligh

Meanwhile, at Up The Creek Too (Croydon) the show on the 8th (7.30pm for £10 / £6) featured:

  • Dan Atopolski
  • Raymond and Mr Timkin’s Revue
  • Dara O’Briain

And that same Croydon venue, on Saturday 9th (7.30pm for £14 / £10) featured:

  • Dara O’Briain
  • Rex Boyd
  • Man With a Beard
  • Boothby Graffoe

Background

At this stage in his career Jimmy, having performed his first gigs in late 1998, was still performing above pubs and “going on stage after strippers” (his words) or entering comedy competitions.

He was still 2 months away from the Edinburgh Fringe (where he would perform Rubbernecker with Gervais and Merchant).

There was no tour name at this point. Just driving up and down the UK, sometimes doing 2-3 venues a night.

There is a page (here) about the UK Comedy Circuit.

Pubs & Clubs 1998-2001 lists the early gigs that I’ve documented so far (here).
